BBGG Meeting at Hail Creek Minesite

Glencore & the BBGG would like to invite you to a BBGG at Hail Creek Mine.

TIME: Approximately 8:30 am to 4:00 pm
PPE: Please bring your own long-sleeved high-visibility shirt, long pants, safety boots, hard hat, and safety glasses.

Registration is limited to 30 people due to meeting room & transport capacities on the mine.

A preliminary agenda (taking into consideration flights & travel time to/from Emerald) is as follows:

08:30 – 9:00 Arrival at Rolleston Mine, visitor sign-in/registration
9:00 – 12:30 Site Welcome/Induction, Technical Presentations
12:30 – 13:00 Lunch
13:00 – 15:30 Pit tour
15:30 – 16:00 Final business & depart from site

When organising travel to site, please consider car pooling to assist with parking arrangements.

2024 Leichardt Award

Words by the Late Ken Preston:

Brett Larkin and David Green are the 2024 recipients of the Leichardt Award. They have been awarded this for their work in developing CoalLog. Over time CoalLog has become the standard for coal borehole data collection and presentation in Queensland, New South Wales and most likely, other coal regions around the world.
From the late 1970s, when computer processing of coal borehole data became common practice, until the development of CoalLog in 2012, data dictionaries and data formats used within the coal industry were characterised by a universal lack of order and consistency.
Indeed, within the same organisation each project may well have had a different dictionary/data format. This created significant inefficiencies within and between organisations, hindered ready capture and transferal of data and restricted the ability for government survey organisations to access and publish standardised data.
Whilst the concept of CoalLog is not radical or groundbreaking, the fact that it was developed at all against a widespread acceptance of a lack of standardisation and the lack of a willingness to break away from this muddled approach, is a tribute to the developers and their approach,
which was characterised by the following:

  • They identified the problem (basically a complete lack of standardisation) and decided to do something to address it;
  • In the 2010-12 period, they consulted with a wide range of industry representatives in its initial design;
  • They brought considerable personal expertise and experience to bear to the development;
  • They saw the job through and produced a solid product in its first version (2012) and continued to develop it to cover a wider range of data types in what is now V3.1 (2021);
  • The product was well documented and widely promoted and made available free to all who want to use it.

In summary it is a clear case of two people identifying a major shortcoming in industry practice and being prepared to conceptualise and see through the development of the robust and widely deployed solution that we know today

Ken Preston & Dick Sanders awarded the 2021 Leichhardt Award

Ken Preston and Dick Sanders were awarded the 2021 Leichhardt Award during the 2021 Bowen Basin Symposium Dinner, hosted at The Big Shed in Mackay, Queensland.  The award dinner followed the second day’s proceedings of the  2021 Bowen Basin Symposium, held at the Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre on 28-30 March 2022.  

Ken Preston and Dick Sanders developed an equation to estimate the density of coal more accurately, which has become part of the industry’s lexicon known as the Preston-Sanders equation.

New Hope Group & the BBGG would like to invite you to the third BBGG meeting of 2019, for the final chance to see operations at Jeebropilly Mine.

PPE: Please bring your own long sleeve high-vis shirt, long pants, safety boots, hard hat and safety glasses.

New Hope Group are looking into options for bus transportation from/to Brisbane CBD.  Please register your interest in using this service when you reserve your place for this meeting.  Registering your interest in a seat on the bus is not confirmation at this stage; further seat confirmation requirements will be advertised at a later date.

Registrations are limited to 50 people.

2020 Bowen Basin Symposium website now live!

The BBGG has a proud history of presenting the Bowen Basin Symposium (BBS) every 5 years since 1985. The 2020 Bowen Basin Symposium is shaping up to be the most adventurous and exciting Symposium yet.

The theme of 2020’s event is looking “Beyond 2020: The Future of Coal”. This is an opportunity to look back at where we have come from, where we are now and where we are going.
